Ingredients used in egg free, butter free Orange Loaf Cake
- Yogurt: For me, yogurt is a magical ingredient to use in baking. Use full-fat yogurt which will make your cake moist and flavorful. To make this recipe Vegan, use a non-diary yogurt
- Olive oil: Using olive oil cuts down on “bad” cholesterol and saturated fat in your cake. The extra antioxidants and vitamin E in olive oil gives your cake a heart-healthy boost. I have used a light olive oil here. You can replace olive oil with vegetable oil.
- All Purpose Flour: I have used APF for this cake. Any other flours like GF flour or almond flour may make a great substitute but I have yet to try that yet. An Almond Flour orange loaf cake is on my list.
- Granulated Sugar
- Orange juice: I have used store bought orange juice.
- Orange zest
- Baking soda, Baking powder & Salt
Step-by-step instructions on making Egg Free Orange Cake
Prep. Preheat the oven to 350º F. Prepare your loaf pan by spraying with baking spray and lining with a piece of parchment paper.
Mix wet ingredients. In a bowl add yogurt, oil, orange juice, and vanilla and beat on medium speed until the mixture is light and fluffy.
Mix in dry ingredients. Add flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, orange zest and salt to a bowl and whisk until combined.
Bake. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick or cake tester inserted in the center of the orange loaf cake comes out clean.
Tips, Tricks & Alternations
Since you will be using oil instead of butter, it’s really important to beat sugar, oil and yogurt really well for a light and fluffy crumb. This is the only step that adds air into the cake, so whisk together these ingredients until pale and fluffy.
To make the cake a dairy-free orange cake recipe, use diary free yogurt.
You can use butter milk (mix 1 tbsp. vinegar with 1 cup milk) in place of yogurt for great results.
Fresh orange juice is ideal for this cake. However, in absence of fresh oranges, use orange juice.
I find it easier to zest the oranges before juicing them.
Prepare your cake tin by greasing and lining with a parchment paper. I have used a loaf pan here to make a orange loaf cake, but you can go for a round cake tin or even a Bundt pan.
Be careful not to overbake it. Use a toothpick to test if the cake is baked.
Cool completely before cutting the cake. The orange flavor becomes stronger over time, giving you a juicy punch in every bite.

Hi , this looks very delicious..
can we use wheat flour instead of APF if so any changes to be made ? Thanks
Hi! Wheat flower will make the cake little dense. But the taste will be same.
Gluten free four option , any idea. Thanks.
Looks and should taste delicious as well.
Please suggest me.
How much is one cup? My 1 cup measures 250ml. So 1cup how much should I take?
Thank you for your suggestion. Will eagerly wait for your reply.
Is the baking temp 180 deggree?
Hey! 1 cup for dry ingredient is 128 gram
And yes 180 C
You can try with Almond flour.

Devyani, yes you can!
Can we bake in an oven if so what is the temperature
Sudha! Yes. The recipe has all the details of baking the cake in oven
Hi, i don’t hv yogurt. Any ingredients to substitute?
Hi,
Can I substitute APF with semolina completely and it will still get the same texture?
Do I need to make any changes in other ingredients if I use semolina?
Thanks!
You can used apple sauce or mashed bananas
I haven’t tried with semolina. Not sure how the texture will be. May be you have to add more yogurt. You can check the semolina cake recipe from my blog. I bake that all time.
Omg, the cake looks PERFECT in your pictures. I’m salivating just looking at it hahah
What is the subsitute for yogurt
Hi..the cake looks lovely but I want to bake even healthier version of the cake. I bake banana bread with no oil,no sugar and no flour..
Can I substitute either whole wheat flour/oats flour instead of refined four .if yes ,what qty should I use..
honey instead of sugar – if yes qty ?
What can be an oil substitute – I have heard about applesauce and used it when I am baking banana bread and it turns out great…but any idea applesauce can be used instead of oil for this recpie
I don’t have yougurt . Can I use eggs
Yes, absolutely. 1 egg replaces 1/4th cup yogurt
Yes you can replace APF with whole wheat flour but the cake wont be as spongy. The taste would still be great though.
As for sugar, you can try some good quality sugar replacements meant for baking and use the same amount as given in the recipe.
For oil, yes apple sauce will be a good option.
What is APF
Maida or all purpose flour
Eggs or apple sauce or buttermilk
Is there any replacement for baking powder?
Mix ½ teaspoon of vinegar with ¼ teaspoon of baking soda. This mixture will give you 1 teaspoon of baking powder as well.
This looks yum, can I use fresh orange juice ?
Of course
I tried this, but somehow my cake didnt rise well, tastes hood though but its not spongy.
Can melted butter be used instead of oil OR can sesame oil or groundnut oil be used?
Hi I followed your recipe to the T, but my cake sunk horribly… I am a bit doubtful about your proportion of baking soda and baking powder.. to me this seems the cause.. in all my previous baking recipes I used 1 tsp baking pwd and 1/2 tsp soda .. with same flour proportions.
Hi! The reason for sinking i can think of is – overmixing . I have used the same proportion of baking powder and baking soda. Another case might be, expiry dates of the soda/baking powder?
Yes you can use any light oil or melted butter
Thanks for the receipe, can this be tried with pineapple juice to make it a pineapple cake?
I would like to use eggs then it’s would be two eggs correct ?
Yes
Yes, absolutely

Hi
My cake came out awesome in terms of taste but it kept falling apart. I somehow think its the baking powder and baking soda proportions. Can you pls tell
Me why wud my cake fall apart?
Hi! Was the batter runny? The baking soda and baking powder amount is correct.
Could be because you overmixed the batter?

Hi

Taste good but it’s not that fluffy as it shows in ur pick. Can u please help. Thanks
Nice! Sounds tasty and yummy!
Hi,
I am not a baker. I tried your recipes for this cake and Lemon cake. Both turned out good in taste but somehow my cakes become flat in the center. They become fluffy when in the oven but when laid for cooling, they become flat. What could be the reason for this and how do I make it even like yours?
Thanks in advance.
Hey, i tried your orange loaf cake and it turned out awesome …..where do i look for your lemon cake and any suggestion for lemon glaze on top ….
Can it be made with eggs and without yogurt?
If yes how many eggs would do.
Thanks
Yes. Replace yogurt with 2 eggs.
Just wondering what flour is best to use? What you mean by thick yoghurt? Is Alpro plain yoghurt okay? And what temperature for a fan oven?
What is All purpose flour? Also, can I use gluten free flour?
Thanks Angeline
Have you made this with sugar alternate like maple syrup / peanut butter or any nut butter / honey? I am looking at ways to avoid sugar.
Hey! I tried this cake today with eggs. Came out great.. Lovely dark brown outer color. It’s falling apart though. Next time I would like to replace the APF with whole wheat flour though just to make it more healthy. Would the flour proportion be the same for whole wheat flour?
Hii, 2nd time im.trying the recipe..
This time i used high protein flour and somehow the bread didnt rise… any idea why? Flavour is great though
I love your recipe and have baked this loaf 3 times already. It’s a huge hit with my family and neighbors. I just upped the flour to 1-3/4 on my subsequent bakes. Look forward to other egg-free and butter-free recipes! Thanks for sharing.

What is thick yoghurt? And I am unable to get orange juice, can I use only orange zest instead of orange juice, if yes, how much for the above recipe?
Wow….I am pleasantly surprised! I made this today and used sour cream instead of yogurt. I baked in a loaf pan and it came out just perfect! Thank you for the recipe!
